ANALYSING DESIGNS
The key to writing to annotations is CLARITY. Say what it is you want to say, and that's it.
Analysing other Designs: The purpose of analysing designs in your Visual Study and Folio is to demonstrate to the moderator your understanding of a variety of designs, visual arts language and each designs relevance to the development of your own work.
Annotating your Designs: You will use annotations to demonstrate your own decision-making process, in regards to the exploration, development and refinement of your own designs. It also serves as a tool for the moderator to navigate your folio to see the progression of your thinking and work.

Below is a short guide to writing an analysis for design, this one is in reference to one variation of Bob Kane's 'Batman' logo.
1) Form (What it looks like)
In this section you need to discuss, using visual arts language, the various visual elements you observe.
Click here for a list of Visual Arts terminology.
- Kane has utilised a number of visual elements and principles in this logo:
Contrast - The boldness of the contrast between black and yellow creates a strong dynamic.
Shape - The yellow ellipse lends emphasis to the overall silhouette of the bat symbol.
Form - The bat symbol fills the majority of the ellipse, creating the idea of size, the outspread wings and multiple sharp points creates a feeling of fear as the wings envelope you.
2) Function (What it does)
In this section you need to interpret the function of the design.
The function of this design is to create a logo that leaves an impression. The simplicity of the logo ensures that it is instantly recognisable at just a glance. The boldness of the logo leaves the viewer of the image with the impression that 'Here is something that is powerful'. The distinctiveness of the logo also ensures it stands out amongst it's competitors.
3) Success and Relevance
In this section you need to evaluate the success/failure of the designers work and the relevance to your own work.
- Clearly the enduring effectiveness of this logo means that it is a successful one. Something I will need to ensure I develop in my own designs is this idea of simplicity and distinctiveness.
